N-TERFACE® Material
SUGGESTED APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF N-TERFACE® MATERIAL
Clean, Partial Thickness Burns:
- All blisters and debris should be debrided from areas and cleaned/rinsed with solution of choice.
- Apply N-TERFACE Material in a single layer overlapping wound margins. (Overlapping of contiguous sheets is of no consequence.)* An antimicrobial ointment or cream is applied directly over the
N-TERFACE Material.
- Overlying dressings (such as Winfield's BREAKAWAY®Dressing) for absorbency and/or protection are then applied.
- Outer Dressings Should Be Removed and The Wound Inspected Daily.
- At dressing change, outer dressings are removed down to the layer of N-TERFACE Material. If N-TERFACE Material is non-adherent to the wound, remove and apply fresh N-TERFACE Material.
- If an ointment is used, it is possible to examine the wound through the N-TERFACE Material. Any accumulation of blood or exudate may be removed utilizing a cotton 4x4 and saline. Simply cleanse through the N-TERFACE Material without disturbing the healing wound bed. Fresh ointment is applied through the N-TERFACE Material and fresh absorbent wraps applied. Subsequent dressing changes are performed in a similar manner as needed.
- After 3-5 days of this routine, the N-TERFACE Material may be removed from the wound surface without inducing pain, bleeding, or disrupting ongoing epithelialization. Reapply the N-TERFACE Material and ointment as necessary to protect and prevent shearing of new epithelium by outer dressings.
Newly Applied Skin Grafts
N-TERFACE Material may be utilized to cover newly applied sheet or expanded mesh grafts. Considerations as to the method of use and desired function of the N-TERFACE Material should be determined prior to application (methods #1 and #2).
METHOD #1: N-TERFACE Material in combination with an ointment or ointment impregnated fine mesh gauze.
Note: N-TERFACE Material utilized in combination with an ointment or ointment impregnated fine mesh gauze enhances its nonadherent characteristics and facilitates removal of both outer dressings and the N-TERFACE Material at dressing change.
- N-TERFACE is applied in a single layer with edges overlapping wound margins. N-TERFACE may be placed in sterile saline prior to application to increase conformance and allow the material to be molded to irregular surfaces.
- Ointment or an ointment impregnated fine mesh gauze is applied directly over the N-TERFACE Material. Outer wraps (such as Winfield's BreakAwayâ Dressing) for absorbency and protection are then applied.
- At dressing change outer dressings come off easily and atraumatically down to the layer of N-TERFACE Material.
Note: In many instances the N-TERFACE will simply fall away from a graft site along with the outer wraps. If you prefer leaving the N-TERFACE in place throughout the healing process, you may want to staple the N-TERFACE in place when it is initially applied in surgery.
- Dressing changes are performed daily. If the initial layer of N-TERFACE is removed, fresh N-TERFACE should be reapplied to avoid adherence of outer dressings to the graft site and to prevent friction or shearing by the overlying dressing materials.
METHOD #2: N-TERFACE Material utilized in combination with moist wraps.
Note: In absence of ointment or ointment impregnated gauze, N-TERFACE will become lightly adherent to the graft site. The N-TERFACE Material is left in place and routine dressing changes are performed.
- N-TERFACE Material is applied in a single layer with edges overlapping wound margins. N-TERFACE may be placed in sterile saline prior to application to increase conformance and allow the material to be molded to irregular surfaces.
- Outer wraps (such as Winfield's BREAKAWAY® Dressing), moistened with a solution of choice, are then applied for absorbency and protection.
- At dressing change outer wraps are removed down to the layer of N-TERFACE Material. As long as the N-TERFACE Material is dry and in good apposition with the graft site the N-TERFACE may remain in place until healing is complete or until the interstices of expanded mesh graft fill.
Note: Following the initial dressing change, daily dressing changes are performed. The patient may undergo range of motion exercises with the N-TERFACE in place and subsequent dressing changes are essentially painless.
- N-TERFACE is easily and atraumatically removed at 5-7 days post grafting without patient discomfort.
Of special note is that N-TERFACE helps secure grafts in place especially over jointed areas. In addition, N-TERFACE allows you to monitor your newly applied grafts more closely. Outer dressings may be removed as early as 24 hours post grafting. The graft is examined through the N-TERFACE Material and fresh wraps applied.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
The N-TERFACE Material may be used as the primary wound contact layer after laser skin resurfacing. Its properties provide for all drainage to pass through the N-TERFACE Material into the absorbent dressing of your choice.
When utilizing the N-TERFACE Material with laser skin resurfacing it should be noted that maintaining appropriate amounts of ointments/Vaseline/steroid combinations, of your choice, is necessary for the desired successful outcome.
The following suggested applications are provided only as a guide for use of the N-TERFACE Material and it is recognized that other variations will produce similar favorable results.
Upon initial application of N-TERFACE Material care should be used to cover all areas of laser resurfaced skin. The N-TERFACE Material should extend beyond the area of resurfacing.
Apply ointment or cream of choice to freshly resurfaced areas. Vaseline, antibiotic ointment and/or steroid combinations will perform with the N-TERFACE Material.
NOTE: Patients should be instructed to maintain appropriate levels of ointment/creams. Apply absorbent/gauze dressing over N-TERFACE Material. Secure with stretch net or tape. Gauze/ absorbent is changed as needed.
Options:
- The N-TERFACE Material may be left in place for 5 or 6 days with the patient applying ointments/creams through the N-TERFACE Material as needed on a daily basis.
- Removal of N-TERFACE at day 2 or 3. Cleansing of resurfaced area with mild cleanser. Reapply N-TERFACE and ointments/creams. Removal of N-TERFACE at post op day 5 or 6.
- Daily removal of N-TERFACE. Daily cleansing of resurfaced area. Application of ointment/creams daily as needed. Repeat until post op day 5 or 6.
Skin Ulcers
- N-TERFACE is applied in a single layer with edges overlapping wound margins.
- The characteristics of N-TERFACE allow it to remain in place at dressing change.
- An ointment is applied directly over the N-TERFACE Material or directly to the wound surface.
- Absorbent outer dressings (such as Winfield's BREAKAWAYTM Dressing) are then applied.
- At time of dressing change the N-TERFACE Material is not removed. Outer dressings are easily and atraumatically removed down to the N-TERFACE Material. (NOTE: If the N-TERFACE Material is nonadherent and comes off easily at time of dressing change, apply fresh N-TERFACE at that time.)
- The wound can be inspected and cleansed through the
N-TERFACE Material.
- Outer absorbent dressings are changed daily, the wound inspected and/or cleansed as required. Fresh ointment and absorbent dressings are reapplied at each dressing change.
- N-TERFACE is easily and atraumatically removed without bleeding or patient discomfort
on the 4th or 5th day. Repeat procedure until wound has healed.
- Of special note, the N-TERFACE Material makes it easier for patients to do their own dressing changes at home and feel comfortable doing them.
